Q&A

Robinson – Skeel Wedding Q&A

What taxi services are available between Ryde and Seaview?

It’s a couple of miles between the two and in our experience taxis aren’t as available as the mainline, so our advice is book in advance. We know about 30 people are coming from Ryde location.

Alpha Taxis 01983 280280 (bigger). bookings@alphaiow.co.uk.

Taxi Isle of Wight Tudor’s Taxi 07450 631969

Ashey Taxis 07506 779944

Taximick 07778 799938

Jet Cars 070 9306 6324

I’m staying  in the Ryde area the day before. Where can I eat?

These are all in Union Street and pretty good.

Fumo                                       – Burgers and Italian ££ suits all

Ada                                            -  Mediterranean ££

Wetherspoons in Ryde. £ cheapest. Best bet for a beer too

French Franks                  - Sandwich’s/Coffee £

Ryde Tandoori                  – Curry ££

Ristorantee                        – Italian ££

RT Café Grill                      – Top class food ££££ book early, near Union Street.

…and Seaview Hotel has a good bar and restaurant too.

Is there anything I can do nearby ?

Walk from Ryde to along Appley Beach and have coffee at The Dell which overlooks the bay. Start here (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ztBGENASppnG7Qp28) walk East. Nearby you can see the Hovercrafts come in and out. Also it’s a great view over to Portsmouth.  The long pier hasn’t anything to ‘visit’ at the end – it is where to Catamaran from Portsmouth Docks.

If you are in Seaview, use Google Maps to find the walking route to Priory Bay, which you can reach via Seagrove Bay. It's a 20-minute walk.

Union Street is full off one off shops, rather than chain stores, and worth a browse.  Try House of Zabre for its clothes, Pickle and Dill for local produce AND Framers for local gifts / art / pictures. Graces Bakery is further up the High Street if you want some take out cake. Cash machines, Sainsburys local and Pharmacy are also here.

There is a large Tesco just outside of Ryde that sells the usual stuff and petrol. If you are coming to the Ryde area via the car ferry, there is a Tesco Express on the way.

Quarr Abbey is worth a look. It is just outside of Ryde on the way to the car ferry. It has free car parking and a café. You can also see part of the Abbey, including some old (limited) ruins.

The Garlic Farm is 15 15-minute drive and worth a visit. https://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk

There is a large, free, and quite impressive bus museum in Ryde that should be open. Details at https://www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/things-to-do/isle-of-wight-bus-and-coach-museum-p136701

Is it safe to walk about in Ryde or nearby at night?

In our experience, it is.

How good is parking on the Isle of Wight?

There is plenty of short-term free parking, but they are geared up to get the most out of visitors, and you may find close to hotels, you will need to pay 24 24-hour fee.  There is very little ‘residents permit’ parking, so free parking is available out of the small town centre. There are normally plenty of parking spaces, although there are fewer in Seaview, where our wedding/reception is. If you are coming to our house at any point, there is parking near our house, but not loads right outside, so be prepared to park in a nearby street.
